An idealized representation of grape harvest in the Puy-de-Dôme district in about 1895.
The young couple is posing in front of Tournoël Castle (XIIth century) and the vineyard, where the woman picks the grapes from with a pruning knife. She puts the grapes into her woven basket which she will empty into a larger basket locally called “berthe”, which the man will carry on his back. Both of them are neatly dressed. He is standing and wears a shirt, a buttoned sleeveless waistcoat, a jacket and his working trousers. He also wears a large-brimmed hat and wooden clogs, which he has repaired with a thin strap on the top. She is seated and wears a headdress covering her hair, a blouse with a scarf over it, a large skirt protected by an apron tucked up to her waist and strapped clogs.
The details are so precise that each grape may be sampled and counted.
