In Greek mythology, Silenus is the adoptive father and tutor of the god Dionysus, often accompanying him. He is also a minor deity personifying intoxication.
He is typically depicted in a satirical form as a jolly yet greatly unattractive old man, with heavy features, a potbelly, and a bald head.
In this bas-relief, Silenus is portrayed drunkenly riding his donkey, accompanied by his children, the Sileni (forest spirits with hairy ears and horse-like feet), and nymphs.
