This portrait of a nymph was inspired from a low-relief decorating the Fontaines des Innocents in Paris.

That monument fountain was built in 1549 to celebrate the arrival of French King Henri II to Paris, by Jean Goujon. It’s located in the 1st district of Paris, Place du Bellay, Quartier des Halles. It was registered as national Heritage in 1862. Goujon decided to ornament that fountain with light reliefs evocating water nymphs, referring to the ancient custom of the nympheus. The nympheus itself was inspired by marine triumphs sculpted on ancient sarcophage.
